What is Supply Chain Management?

You've probably heard of supply chain management before - perhaps in the news following the Suez canal blockage in 2021, or US port congestion in early 2022. Supply chain management is essentially the management of the flow goods, information and funds within a business and between businesses required to deliver a product, service or more generally support operations. Effective supply chain management allows companies the opportunity to gain an advantage over their competitors, as well as ensure that their customers are satisfied with the product or service they are receiving.
Supply chain management is a rapidly growing field and one of exponentially increasing importance - especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. By some estimates, there are seven supply chain job openings for every one supply chain graduate. Supply chain management is a broad field and does not consist exclusively of transportation, logistics or manufacturing; even firms not immediately considered as "supply chain," like Deloitte, Capital One and PWC, hire supply chain majors and have hired Smith supply chain graduates. As a result of this, the Smith supply chain management major pairs very well with virtually every major UMD Smith offers - we strongly encourage all students to consider double majoring in supply chain! While not required, a double major in supply chain provides students an incredibly strong and more competitive position to obtain an ideal future career at essentially any company.
